Astaxanthin

A carotenoid antioxidant from microalgae with potent free-radical scavenging activity.

Astaxanthin is a xanthophyll carotenoid produced naturally by the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis and responsible for the pink-red color of salmon, shrimp, and flamingos. It is one of the most potent natural antioxidants, with in vitro studies suggesting 6,000 times greater singlet-oxygen quenching activity than vitamin C. Unlike beta-carotene, astaxanthin spans the entire cell membrane, providing dual-layer protection. In supplement research, it is studied for its anti-inflammatory properties, UV protection, and preliminary 5-alpha reductase inhibition. Typical supplemental doses are 4-12 mg/day.
