Hypothyroidism

Underactive thyroid gland producing insufficient thyroid hormones.

Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland produces insufficient thyroid hormones (T3 and T4), slowing metabolism throughout the body. It is the most common thyroid disorder, with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (autoimmune) being the leading cause in iodine-sufficient populations. Symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, dry skin, constipation, and diffuse hair loss affecting the scalp, eyebrows (lateral thinning), and body hair. Thyroid-related hair loss is reversible with proper treatment. Nutrients critical for thyroid function include iodine, selenium, zinc, and vitamin D.
