Structure/Function Claim

A claim describing how a supplement affects the body's structure or function, not disease.

A structure/function claim describes how a dietary supplement affects the normal structure or function of the body without referencing a disease. These claims do not require FDA pre-approval but must be truthful, not misleading, and include the disclaimer: 'This statement has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.' Examples: 'Supports healthy hair growth' (allowed) vs. 'Treats hair loss' (disease claim, prohibited without FDA drug approval). The distinction between structure/function and disease claims is central to supplement marketing compliance.
